-RESTAURANT REVIEW-

BILL’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Kathy Bell for Bill Sullivan

Yamato Japanese Steakhouse

Our esteemed food critic Bill Sullivan was out of town and couldn't attend our DOT dinner, so I am subbing for him. I'll start by summing up in a single word—WOW!  This was my first visit to Yamato Japanese Steakhouse, and I couldn't be more impressed. Our entire group of fifteen freethinkers was seated around a double hibachi square, and we were assigned two chefs. Initially, I wondered why the chairs were so low and we joked about needing phone books to sit on. Then I found out—protection! In a dramatic entrance the chefs prepared the griddles with oil (though later I thought it could have been lighter fluid) and set it afire, and WHOOSH! The flames went halfway to the ceiling and I was grateful that my hair didn't get singed. The show continued until all of us were served with egg fried rice, mixed vegetables, lo mein noodles and the meat and/or seafood of our choice, done to perfection. A couple of people opted for sushi instead, which was beautifully plated and pronounced excellent. Later there was more fire as the chefs each constructed a vessel of raw onion rings, filled them with a flammable substance, and created spewing volcanos. There was conversation and laughter around the table for two hours, and sadly no one had room for dessert which involved two different types of cheesecake. My recommendation: Go to Yamato, and take a group of friends with you if you are looking for a totally different dining experience. You won't be disappointed.
